4.1.4 STRATEGY OF ANALYSIS

The strategy adopted here is: (1) to review the contemporary understanding of arid ecosystems; (2) to use this theory to explain a case study of desertification.

The theory is tested against the observations of ecosystem structure, processes, and behaviour, particularly at the primary consumer (herbivore) level. The criteria for success in this test will be that observations on the process and outcome of desertification that are available are consistent with contemporary ecological theory.
